History of Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair basketball is an adapted team sport. It retains most of the major rules and scoring traditions of its namesake, and is played on a standard basketball court using a 10-foot hoop. However, the equipment used to play the game is unique: basketball wheelchairs have lower seats then typical wheelchairs, and the wheels are angled outward to provide additional speed and balance.
Wheelchair Basketball utilizes the concept of “classification”, which is an international regulation used to harmonize players’ varying levels of ability. It evaluates the functional capabilities of players on a point scale of 1 – 4.5. The five players from each team on the court may not exceed a total of 14 points at any time.
